Why Dermaplaning Isn’t Always the Best Skin Treatment Choice

Dermaplaning has become a popular facial treatment, often promoted as a quick fix for glowing skin and smooth makeup application. While it certainly has its place, dermaplaning is not suitable for everyone — and in many cases, there are more effective, longer-lasting skin treatments available.
At our advanced skin clinic in Grantham, we believe in honest education, not trends. Here’s what you really need to know before booking dermaplaning.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment that uses a surgical blade to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair (often referred to as “peach fuzz”) from the surface of the skin.
The immediate result is smoother skin — but the results are purely superficial.
The Problem With Dermaplaning
While dermaplaning can leave the skin feeling soft, it does not treat the skin at a deeper level. This is where many clients are misled.
1. Dermaplaning Does Not Improve Skin Health
Dermaplaning only removes surface debris. It does not:
Stimulate collagen
Improve skin structure
Treat pigmentation
Address acne scarring
Strengthen the skin barrier
For long-term skin improvement, treatments such as microneedling, skin boosters, or advanced facials are far more effective.
2. Not Suitable for Acne-Prone or Sensitive Skin
Dermaplaning is often unsuitable for clients with:
Active acne
Inflamed or sensitised skin
Rosacea
Compromised skin barriers
Using a blade over active breakouts can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation — something we frequently see in corrective skin consultations at our Grantham skin clinic.
3. Hair Regrowth Myths & Misunderstanding
While dermaplaning does not technically cause hair to grow back thicker, it can leave hair feeling more noticeable due to blunt regrowth. For many clients, this creates a cycle of dependency on repeated dermaplaning sessions without addressing actual skin concerns.
4. Short-Term Results, Frequent Maintenance
The glow from dermaplaning is short-lived. Because it doesn’t stimulate skin renewal or collagen, results fade quickly — often within days.
This leads to frequent treatments with minimal long-term benefit. If you are prepared to invest in your skin you are better to have a short course of 3/4 mirconeedling sessions or skin boosters instead of long term spending with little to no results.
Why We Don’t Recommend Dermaplaning as a Standalone Treatment
At our beauty salon and skin clinic in Grantham, our focus is on treatments that actually change the skin — not just temporarily polish it.
Dermaplaning may be appropriate:
As an occasional add-on
For very specific skin types
When used strategically by trained professionals
However, it should never replace advanced skin treatments designed to improve skin health at a deeper level.
Better Alternatives to Dermaplaning
If your goal is brighter, smoother, healthier skin, we recommend treatments that work with the skin, not against it:
Microneedling – stimulates collagen and improves texture
Chemical peels – correct pigmentation, acne, and ageing
Advanced medical facials – tailored to your skin condition
Professional exfoliation protocols – without trauma
These treatments deliver visible results that improve over time.
